Spring’s mood is always one of new beginnings & with new beginnings we tend to think of flowers starting to bloom & romance in the air. This is right on point this year! I had the privilege of attending New York Fashion Week , as well as The FGI ( Fashion Group International of South Florida ) Trend Presentation featuring Ken Downing, Senior VP Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus and he poetically spoke of all that we have to look forward to this season in Fashion!

We saw a lot of Florals, ruffles, flowers, flounce. Femininity flowed on the runways giving a very Romantic girl vibe. Eyelet, Croche & puffy sleeves flounce in the romanticism that defines this season. We saw Prairie dresses making a huge comeback but the designers are all putting their mark on them with everything from maxi to midi to mini lengths.
“The Mask is a must! ” We are seeing veiled faces, hats, models hiding behind oversized shielded sunglasses creating the mystery of whose behind it. Ken Downing pointed out that this trend speaks to where we are in society right now with the acceptance of transgender. It shows the importance of diversity & gender fluidity. Many of the designers even exploring by dressing male models in women’s clothing & vice versa helping to blend the lines of gender specificity.
We are witnessing the return of the suit. Everything from oversized menswear inspired suits, to very tailored jackets. Shoulder pads are shaping the suit jackets & matching pant suits are back, whether the pants are biker shorts ( ugh, I know , but we better get used to it because it’s not fading any time soon ), wide trousers or skinny leggings.

Accessories : Feathers are the decoration of the moment! Plumes, ruffles head to toe, fur trimmed sandals. Easter egg /Candy coated color was seen all over the runway. Think pink, lavender ,citrine yellow, purple, aqua, mint green , baby blue. Apricot is the “new pink ” but it looks more like the color of an almond. Neutral shades & desert suedes, as well. Mules & sling backs are showing up . Summer boots & Lace up shoes. There’s not a particular shoe or boot, the idea is color & designers are having fun making it their own.
Handbags are more structured. Wooden top handles, & Oversized totes seem to fit everything you need this season in them. Utility belt bags are also taking over and The big straw bag with an accent of neon heads into spring breaks & Summer vacays. SWIMWEAR is also a little more structured & functional this season . Strong & sexy one- shoulder looks and Hold you up “halters”.
We are also seeing a lot of Animal Prints, Zebra in particular. Textural weaves, Cultural prints, 1 shoulder looks, fringe and crochet, crochet, crochet all day ! Lace up sandals, and big bold jewelry. Lots of Gold , (80’s) gold & silver & metallics. Hats are back and scarves are wrapping around this fashion season.
Slip dresses are slipping back into fashion (90’s) and hold on to your biker jackets, they never go out of style. Just throw it on over your new prairie dress and you’ll be stepping into the season in style!
