I thought I’d share my smoothie recipe with you this morning, during this tough time of isolation. Groceries are becoming more difficult to obtain these days, as people have been hoarding items in fear, and companies are struggling to produce and restock them. I’m going to help you with a few tips for substituting ingredients that you may be running out of.

I normally use almond milk as my base for my smoothies. I’m running low on it and don’t want to risk getting the Corona Virus at the grocery store, so I’ve come up with some alternatives. Today, I used a handful of walnuts and I found some tart cherry juice to use instead of almond milk. The walnuts will give me the protein I’d be getting from the almond milk and help to thicken up the smoothie, as fruit juice tends to be less dense than nut milks. Walnuts are great because they contain a ton of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that the body needs in order to function properly. They contain omega 3 fatty acids which can help reduce inflammation & also discourage the build up of plaque in the arteries. Walnuts also contain antioxidants which help with anti aging, as well as slowing down the deterioration of the brain. They also contain high amounts of linolenic acid which works as an emollient to soften your skin.

I used tart cherry juice today, as my liquid base for the smoothie ( along with some ice). You can use water and a few ice cubes, but fruit juice will add more flavor and vitamins. Tart cherry juice also has a ton of health benefits you may not know about, including boosting the immune system, improving memory, aiding in sleep, and fighting gout symptoms. Tart cherry juice contains anthocyanin which are known to kill microbes, such as bacteria, that cause disease. We need our immune systems healthy and strong to be able to fight off this corona Virus that’s circulating. Because of it’s high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, tart cherry juice is a great source for muscle strength and recovery, after a work out, as well. This juice is also rich in melatonin, which may help you sleep better at night. Just be sure to read the ingredients when you’re buying Tart Cherry Juice, to get it pure with no added sugars.

Today’s smoothie ingredients : Tart Cherry juice, a handful of berries, a handful of walnuts, a handful of spinach, 1/2 of a frozen banana, 2 tlbsp chia seeds ( for extra protein). I used the Nutri Bullet to blend it all together. Enjoy!
*( keep in mind you can also use frozen fruit if you run out of fresh fruit and organic is always best!)
